About a decade ago, the Legend Killers were considered London ’s ultimate party band. Led by the dynamic duo of lead singer Earle Rutherford and Mike McGill on vocals and bass, the band was known for their beer-fueled intense, manic performances and set lists featuring covers of 60s garage bands, 70s punk classics and their own three-chord originals. They were as raw and impossible to ignore as a genital itch. It was music for people who can’t sit down when they go out. Music fully deserving of an appreciative fullbodied “Go man, go!” at the end of every song.

Then in the tradition of all great London bands, they sputtered out, hung it up for a few years, reunited for a one-shot gig and had so much fun they decided to do it again. Since reforming three years ago, they’ve put out the CD, Rattlesnake Beer, finished fifth out of 20 bands in Little Steven’s Underground Garage Battle of the Bands contest in Cleveland and have just released a new CD, We’re Workin’ On It. In the process, Earle’s involvement has been off and on. And for the new CD, it’s the sans-Earle line-up of McGill on lead vocals, guitarists Rick Barnes and Alex Howard and Jeff Depew on drums. For those purists who think that the Legend Killers without Earle is like ABBA without the chicks, they will be happy to know that the boys have included Gonna Snap, with Earle singing his self-penned lyrics. It’s a welcome heartfelt wailing of a tortured soul as in – “Yeah, walk a mile in my brain, pal.” But McGill is a more than capable singer

with vocals straight from the gut and the perfect approach for their choice of the two Flamin’ Groovies covers – Slow Death and Shake Some Action which bookend the CD. What’s in between are songs that variously conjure up images of other garage and oldschool punk masters. On the single, Loaded Gun, McGill sounds like a street-strutting Stooge with a heartful of napalm. (Hear for yourself at www.legendkillers.com.) Then again, on Hittin’ The Road, the vocals sound suspiciously like 63 Monroe ’s Steven R. Stunning imitating Bobby Darin. (If not, that’s a compliment, Mike.)

Just as in their glory days, this is perfect Friday night music. At the end of the work week, you get home, crack open a beer and crank up We’re Workin’ On It just to remind yourself that you’re still alive.

What we have here is the first digital release from London's Legend Killers. The Killers go way back to 1985, with original member Mike McGill (now on bass and vocals) and longtime guitarist Rick Barnes still rocking on. New Killers include drummer Jeff Depew (Odessa, Dumb) and guitarist Alex Howard, while original vocalist Earle Rutherford makes a cameo appearance on Gonna Snap. Produced by Andy Magoffin, We're Workin' On It is bookended by two amazing Flamin' Groovies’ covers, Slow Death and Shake Some Action, which are always a highlight of the band’s live performances. In between there are lots of cool originals in the tradition of great bands like The Ramones, and The Fleshtones, with Loaded Gun and King For A Day being just a couple of the winners. – Dave Clarke   A-

“Sweaty garage rock and roll played from the soul (or sole) of the beat up well-loved Converse high top. Like mainlining Dictators and chasing the devil with The Fleshtones. Honest, hardworking rock and roll not created by fortuitous condition.”

Christopher Duda – Sugarbuzz Magazine

“Can I just say how much I'm loving the LEGEND KILLERS new CD? Well-played, well put-together... and in grave danger of being worn out (that's how often I'm playing it!).”

Hey there fellow babies. I finally got to see the Legend Killers after missing out on them a couple of times and I must say they kicked my ass when they played their set last night. They were the second of three acts to perform on the CTO stage along with Kover and Supagroup whom I had the misfortune of missing out on after the Legend Killers and as far as Kover goes, had the misfortune of having to sit and watch them for 15 minutes in a total haze of "I don't get it". Well anyway The Legend Killers took the stage and played a sweaty, beer induced set of their punky garage rock that made the women dance and the men raise their beers in the air. The band played tunes from their brilliant new album "We're Working On It" which has become a mainstay on my play list on In The Red. They also tore into a blistering version of their classic Ripping It Up and done Iggy and The Stooges justice with a cover of Seach & Destroy. The Legend Killers have been rockin' and rollin' since 1985 with numerous personnel changes over the past 21 years but I must say this current line up of Mike, Al, Rick and Jeff are the most cohesive. Their performance last night just sanctioned it. The band was tight like a fist ready to knock someone's teeth out. The Legend Killers are London's band. They have a very loyal and dedicated following over the past 21 years and I must say as a rookie Legend Killers fan who has only been listening to them for a few years, last night's performance made me an even bigger fan. So guys as I stick my devil's horns up in the air, I say to you, here's for another 21 years of beer, chicks and rock n' roll!!! You guys fucking rule!!!
